Lamma Island

Energy Solutions International Selected by Hong Kong Electric for the Lamma Island Gas Project

Energy Solutions International, ESI, are pleased to announce that Hong Kong Electric (HEC) has selected PipelineManager for deployment as part of their extension to the Lamma Island natural gas system.
Established in 1889, The Hong Kong Electric Company, Limited (HK Electric) is one of the longest-established power companies in the world. As the main operating company of Power Assets Holdings Limited, HK Electric has a long record of providing an efficient and reliable electricity supply to its half a million customers on Hong Kong and Lamma Islands. HK Electric is currently planning to reconfigure and extend their existing natural gas system. PipelineManager will provide the mission critical 24/7 monitoring and optimization technology for HEC’s entire gas network.

“We are excited to be part of Hong Kong Electric power grid expansion” said Dr. Jo Webber CEO of Energy Solutions. “We are seeing a tremendous amount of pipeline network expansion in Asia and we are expanding our operations in South East Asia to better support our existing and new clients in the region.”

About Hong Kong Electric

HK Electric provides world-class performance in the business of electricity generation, transmission, distribution and sales in Hong Kong. In the mid-1990s, HK Electric identified the need for building a new extension to its power station in Lamma to cope with the growth of Hong Kong as it entered the 21st Century. To minimize the environmental impacts of the new generating facilities, the Company decided to adopt the gas-fired combined cycle technology for the extension.

Located at a reclaimed site of 22-hectares south of the Lamma Power Station (LPS), the extension was planned to have six gas-fired combined cycle units with a total generating capacity of 1,800 MW. The first 335 MW gas-fired combined cycle unit was synchronized in July 2006 and started its commercial operation in October 2006, bringing the total installed capacity of Lamma Power Station to 3,736MW.

The 24 inch MEDGAZ high pressure deepwater pipeline runs for 210 km along the seabed of the Mediterranean Sea, transporting natural gas from the Beni Saf Compressor Station (BSCS) on the coast of Algeria to the Offshore Pressure Regulation Station (OPRT) at Almería on the coast of Spain and into the Enagas transportation network. The pipeline reaches a maximum depth of 2,155 m as it crosses the Mediterranean.  This paper presents key aspects of the flow assurance studies carried out during the FEED and detailed engineering phases of the project with particular attention to the requirements for a deepwater natural gas pipeline. Moreover the particular requirements for deepwater pipeline commissioning and operation are discussed.
